Under Pressure
This shows the path worn by cutter ants traveling what seems to be miles to and fro- nest to tree. They are quite fascinating creatures. As they move along they secrete some substance that allows them to follow the path back and forth without getting lost. They are very efficient creatures, and they are EVERYWHERE!
My daughter and I came upon this pile of "cutter ant leaves" (scientists, please forgive me)after a torrential rain storm. All the way to the field station we pondered what that was all about. After discussing the observation with Willy the guide at Tirimbina who is so passionate and knowledgable about the rain forest, we surmised that the cutter ants dropped the leaves during the heavy rain and in a panic raced for their nest dropping the leaves to lighten their load. The rains would threaten their ability to find their way home as their memory secretion would be washed away or at least lose its' potency.
