This evening
I prepare supper
In the house that was
My mother's
And father's,
Not much has changed
Most remains the same.

Reminders of another time
Etched into the cutting board,
My father's coffee mug on a hook
As if waiting a return.

This evening
I sat remembering.
In reality,
So much has changed.

Who lives there now? Why were you there? Oh the wonderful questions I had reading. I'd love to see the inside of the old farmhouse where I was raised. I'm sure it is much smaller than when I lived there!

The coffee mug sitting there "as if waiting a return" really strikes me. Such a neat way to use personification

What a lovely walk down memory lane...

How special you got to be in your childhood home. I also wondered how you were able to be there.

The coffee mug waiting for your fathers' return was so full of emotion.

Thank you for telling us your brother lives there now.

I can relate to how you felt. Last year Cindy and I visited my childhood home. No one was there but the door was unlocked and we walked through all the rooms. I was surprised to see that not much had changed since I lived there 63 years ago although it has had residents most of those years.

I think readers bring all kinds of memories to this post. You also made me wonder a lot about what your changes are. Between both, there was plenty of room for strong emotions.
