True Love

My husband built me a bridge to span
Across rushing water
Barren and silent in summer,
Thinning ice in spring,
The stream swells
To overflowing.

He strung a hand hold of
Ropes up the muddy banking
So I could scramble
Alone
Up
And scale
Down
Without a slip.

This walk
Gave us both peace
Any season,
Roots twist like veins
Along the path
Leading to the wide open field,
Where Rex
His ears lay flat
Runs at full tilt.
Woods edge the field
Rex leads the way,
Through the forest,
Blueberry barrens and blow-downs.

A remembrance of true love,
A wooden bridge
Spans a stream,
Waiting for me to cross.

Love is expressed in so many ways through a lifetime together. Every time you walk this bridge, you will remember the love you shared.

Oh my. This couldn't be more heartfelt or more moving. I am so sorry for your loss. But I am so happy you have the "bridge." And your beautiful words of remembrance.

These words... those pictures... everything about this poem evokes love and how much your late husband is missed.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting. I can barely breathe when I cross the bridge...his love overwhelms me.

It is hard to express a love that is so so deep. I have been blessed.

I love that you sometimes share those special gifts from your husband. He was a special man, and this bridge certainly shows that love for you. Considering the "bridge" in the poem is meaningful for you continuing to cross it.

A beautiful, hopeful poem of memory and movement onward. So hard to create a new life... the bridge is essential.

This line gets me: "Blueberry barrens and blow-downs"

I'm not sure why it affects me so, but it does.

A beautiful, heartfelt poem. Delicate in places but strong throughout--like the love I suspect you know.

I am so happy that you can glean from my writing what a great guy my husband is....was and how I feel so so lucky to have shared this journey on earth with him.

What a special, heartfelt gift and place. I love how the poem shows his genuine love and care for you and also how it takes us to that spot in the woods right along with you. Once again your ending tied everything up in such a moving way. Crossing your bridge can mean so many things these days. Just know, you're never really crossing alone.

This is a beautiful poem. I see why you titled it the way you did.
